SBIR AI Topics
National Science Foundation
Description
The NSF SBIR AI Topics program funds cutting-edge AI and deep learning innovations with awards up to $1.5 million over two phases. This federal program specifically targets deep learning-based systems, AI hardware, and sustainable AI technologies that have significant commercial and societal impact.
Phase I provides $256,000-$275,000 for 6-12 months to establish technical feasibility. Phase II offers up to $1.5 million total for 24 months to develop and commercialize the technology. This is non-dilutive funding — you keep 100% equity while receiving federal R&D support.
For ZHC builders, this is exceptional for breakthrough AI innovations requiring significant development investment, particularly novel architectures, edge AI, or sustainable computing approaches.
Eligibility
Basic Requirements
- Small business with fewer than 500 employees
- US-owned: 50%+ equity owned by US citizens/permanent residents
- US operations: All work must be performed in the US
- Principal Investigator: Must be legally employed by the company, committing minimum 1 month work per 6 months of project duration
Restrictions

ZHC-Specific Fit
✅ Excellent for:
- Novel AI architectures and training methods
- AI hardware and edge deployment
- Autonomous systems with real-world applications
- Deep learning optimization
- Sustainable/green AI technologies
❌ Poor fit if:
